Graduate Student Awards


The Economics Department awards two graduate student awards annually:

  1. Economics Graduate Student Research Award of Excellence 

    This award was established to honor a graduate student who exemplifies superb research abilities and an eagerness to engage in scholarly activities.

  2. Economics Graduate Student Teaching Award of Excellence 

    This award was established to honor a graduate student who exemplifies superb teaching abilities and demonstrates extraordinary dedication to teaching economics.

2020 Award Recipient is Santiago Montoya-Blandón

Santiago is a fourth year graduate student who has distinguished himself as a researcher during his time at Emory. Santiago published two articles in peer-reviewed journals during this current academic year. His article published in the International Journal of Forecasting, the leading peer-reviewed journal in this field, was co-authored with Andrés Ramírez-Hassan, and his article in Economics Letters was co-authored with his advisor, David T. Jacho-Chávez. Santiago's research interests include theoretical and applied econometrics with a focus on microeconomic applications.

Economics Graduate Student Teaching Award of Excellence

2020 Award Recipient is Yiqing Xiao

Yiqing Xiao

Yiqing  is a fourth year graduate student who served as the Teaching Assistant for Prof. Dezhbakhsh’s large Principles of Microeconomics class (Econ 101) for the past three years. During this time, she assisted more than 500 students in a prompt, reliable, and professional manner. In addition to grading, Yiqing contributed in a number of other ways, including conducting review sessions, holding office hours and managing economic experiments. In his nomination, Prof. Dezhbakhsh describes Yiqing to be “precise, confident, and clear about topics and respectful, yet firm, in all her interactions with students”. In addition, Yiqing also supervised four undergraduate TAs in each of these three classes. This award is a well-deserved recognition of Yiqing’s professionalism and dedication to department teaching.
