Kafoglis Economics Nobel Laureate Lecture Series

The Emory Economics Department annually sponsors a lecture by a Nobel Laureate in Economics as part of its Milton and Virginia Kafoglis Economics Nobel Laureate Lecture Series.

Named after and founded by esteemed emeritus faculty member, Milton Kafoglis, this lecture series seeks to bring eminent economists to the Atlanta area to speak on important and relevant topics in economics to a broad audience.

About

The lecture series is named for the late Milton Kafoglis, former chair of the Economics department at Emory University, and his wife, Virginia. Kafoglis held the George Woodruff Professorship until his retirement in 1998 and worked in the areas of welfare economics, regulation, social choice, public finance and managerial economics. He died in 2014.

Professor Kafoglis had a distinguished career, holding faculty positions at several universities and serving on the President’s Executive Council in Economics under both Presidents Ford and Carter, before accepting the Harland Chair in Economics at Emory University in 1979.

While officially retired in 1998, Kafoglis continued to teach until 2012 and was a warm and friendly presence around the department for a new generation of faculty. In 2009, he funded the Milton and Virginia Kafoglis Nobel Laureate Lecture Series as a way to bring Nobel laureates and other high profile scholars to Emory’s campus.
