Successful Economics Student Research Fair Held on April 23, 2026
Thursday, April 23, 2026 | 5:00 PM Faculty and students were invited to join us for our annual Student Research Fair and EER Publication Celebration on Thursday, April 23, 2026, between 5:00 - 7:30 pm featuring poster presentations by our Honor Thesis students and third-year doctoral students.
This event offers an opportunity for the Emory community to explore the field of economics as well as the chance for experiential learning in an inclusive environment.
Awards were given for best undergraduate poster preentation and best graduate poster presentation. Dylan LaBorwit received the best undergraduate poster presentation award for his thesis on modeling volatility in prediction markets using jump-diffusion frameworks. Mohammad Fidakar received the best graduate poster presentation award for his research regarding threshold criteria for return migration following forced displacement. Evaluation was conducted by judges Jon Willis, Senior Economist, Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and Veronica Mejia Bustamante , Quant Financial Analyst, Bank of America.
Refreshments were served during the Fair including pizza and sweet treats. The evening concluded with a Senior Sendoff Toast to celebrate our graduating majors.
Kafoglis Nobel Laureate Lecture Series features Dr. Peter Howitt
The Emory community was invited to join us for this public talk featuring Dr. Peter Howitt, 2025 Nobel Laureate in Economics, who spoke on the topic: "AI, Creative Destruction, and the Job Market"
This event was open to the public.
NSF/NBER/CEME General Equilibrium Conference 2025
The Department of Economics and Goizueta Business School of Emory University were pleased to host the 2025 edition of the NSF/NBER/CEME General Equilibrium Conference from the afternoon of October 17 (Fri) to the morning of October 19 (Sun).
The conference invited a wide range of theoretical papers, with a session focusing on AI and machine learning applications to economics. In addition to ~12 contributed papers, Phillipp Strack (Yale) has accepted our invitation to deliver an invited lecture.

Econometrics at Emory: Causal Inference with Panel Data
Friday & Saturday, May 2-3, 2025 The Emory Department of Economics was pleased to host this inaugural Causal Inference conference featuring Keynote Presentation by Nobel Laureate, Guido Imbens, "Nonparametric Factor Models for Average Treatment Effects."

Monday, October 20, 2025 | 4:30 PMThe Economics Leadership Club invited students to a Leadership Panel titled, Leadership at the Crossroads of Business and Economics: How Leaders in Business, Technology, and Academic and Insprire Change, on Monday, October 20th from 4:30-6:00 pm in Atwood 360.
The panel featured the following panelists: Sania Balfour-Fears (Senior Vice President, Morgan Stanley), Barbara Krauthamer (Dean of Emory College of Arts and Sciences), Craig Brechner (CEO Zurich Technology Solutions), and was moderated by Nezha Alaoui, CEO Women Choice.
Emory Economics Resume Clinics Held in Fall 2025
Ensuring our students are well-prepared for their careers is a priority for the Department of Economics. On September 26th, we hosted an 'Emory Economics Resume Clinic' where our undergraduate majors and minors received tailored resume advice.
We were fortunate to have Jezamin Lim, a finance professional with a background at firms like Ernst & Young, Voya, and Invesco, and Romvadee Overbey, an experienced executive from sectors including management consulting and AT&T, look over our students' resumes and provide tailored advice to better showcase the skills our program teaches them. This popular clinic, which we began in Fall 2024, was a two-part series in Fall 2025. We are proud to provide our students with continuous, hands-on career support.

Emory Econ Meet & Greet
Tuesday, September 30, 2025 | 6:00 PMThe Department of Economics invited students interested in pursuing Economics to this Meet & Greet. The event was held on Tuesday, September 30th from 6:00-7:00 pm in Rich 301 (3rd floor).
The Meet & Greet was an informal opportunity to connect with Economics faculty and peers to learn more about the Department, academic paths for economics students at Emory, and post-graduation careers in Economics.
Food was provided.
Stduents were invited to bring along their friends and share this invite with classmates, roommates, or others they think would be interested.
Peer Mentorship Kick-off Event Held on September 12th
Our Emory Econ Peer Mentorship kick-off event was an optional opportunity for student mentors and mentees to connect and mingle with other students in the program. Students were invited to drop in at any point in the event window and stay as long as they like. Snacks, drinks, and games were provided.
The Economics Peer Mentoring program is intended to pair students that have similar interests/goals and create meeting opportunities throughout the semester. Mentees are generally 1st or 2nd year students and Mentors, 3rd or 4th year students. Students must be an Eocnomics major or minor to participate.
Georgia Ph.D. Symposium on Macroeconomics and Finance Held at Emory for April 13, 2026
The symposium was free and open to Ph.D. students at Emory University and other universities in the Atlanta metropolitan area, Georgia, and surrounding states or regions who are interested in macroeconomics and finance.
The goal of the symposium was to provide a supportive platform for Ph.D. students to (1) present their ongoing research (at any stage), (2) receive constructive feedback from peers and faculty, (3) improve presentation and discussion skills, and (4) engage in academic exchange across institutions.
Faculty from universities in the Atlanta area, as well as economists from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, were invited to attend.
Presentation formats included:
- Regular presentations: 25 minutes + 5–10 minutes Q&A
- Lightning session (early-stage work): 10 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A (limited slots)
Early-stage or work-in-progress projects were welcome.
Publication Celebration to Celebrate Doctoral Students' First Publication
The Economics doctoral program celebrates the publication of a student's first peer-reviewed article with the Emory affiliation while enrolled in our program.
This Publication Celebration recognized publications by the following doctoral students:
- Fifth year doctoral candidate, Shabnam Shahrezaei, "The Spatial Origins of Venture Capital: Human Capital and Financial Innovation in the Postwar United States," (joint work with Caroline Fohlin), accepted for publication in Cliometrica.
- First year doctoral student, Zhihao Xu,"Optimal Monetary Policy in Production Networks with Distortions," (joint work with Changhua Yu) published in the Journal of Economic Theory.
All Economics graduate students, faculty, and staff were invited to this annual Publication Celebration.

Professionalism Workshops for Second-Year and Fourth-Year Doctoral Students
These Professionalism Workshop were led by Ian McCarthy and doctoral students in the 2nd and 4th year cohorts were expected to attend their respective workshop.
Professionalism Workshop for Third-Year Doctoral Students
This Professionalism Workshop for third-year doctoral students was led by Ian McCarthy and focused on research workflow, reproducibility, and transparency. All third-year doctoral students were expected to attend.
Lunch was provided. Students were asked to RSVP.
This program was partially funded by Ph.D. alumni donations.

Workshop on Causal Network Analysis

This interdisciplinary workshop was co-organized by Emory Professors David Jacho-Chavez from the Department of Economics and Weihua An from the Department of Sociology, and featured a keynote address by Professor Thomas W. Valente of the Keck School of Medicine at USC.
Space was limited, but there were several spots reserved for doctoral students. Priority was given to those whose work involves Econometrics, network analysis, or causal analysis and inference.
