Special screening of Katasumbika on October 7th

The Institute of African Studies is pleased to invite you to a special screening of Katasumbika, directed by award-winning filmmaker Petna Ndaliko Katondolo.
This film explors the recent events in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where the world was shocked to witness the people of Eastern DRC demanding the departure of UN peacekeepers—at times, through violent means. What lies behind this outrage toward a mission intended to protect the people?
Through a testimonial lens, Katasumbika reflects on what has been overlooked in the legacy of colonialism. It traces the threads of history, the exploitation of natural resources, and the enduring violence in the region. The film asks: can we finally hear the voices of indigenous resistance?
Petna Ndaliko Katondolo is not only an award-winning filmmaker but also an activist and educator. His critically acclaimed works, rooted in decolonial African futurism, engage with historical narratives to confront contemporary sociopolitical and cultural issues. He is also the founder of Yole! Africa, a center for film and arts education, and the home of the Salaam Kivu International Film Festival.
This program is co-sponsored by the Emory Departments of Environmental Sciences, Economics, French & Italian, and Film & Media.

Innovator Diversity Pilots Conference on September 20, 2024
Department of Economics faculty and doctoral students interested in DEI, innovation economics, or experimental economics are invited to attend this co-sponsored workshop at no cost.
In the years since the USPTO’s groundbreaking Progress and Potential Report and the first Innovator Diversity Pilots Initiative conference in Silicon Valley, companies, the USPTO, and academic researchers have taken concrete steps to increase inclusion in inventing. This conference will bring together policymakers, IP attorneys, tech leaders, and academics to describe what we’ve learned through randomized control trials, surveys, and evidence-based strategies for creating more inclusive innovation environments. In the afternoon, we will open up to broader discussions of diversity and innovation economics. For instance, covering the relationship between race and scientific advancement, methods for assessing scientific discoveries' commercial potential, teamwork dynamics in open-source software development, and racial and ethnic representation in high-tech entrepreneurship.
