Nobel Laureate Lecture Series Features Talk by Dr. David Card
The Emory Economics Department annually sponsors a lecture by a Nobel Laureate in Economics as part of its Milton and Virginia Kafoglis Economics Nobel Laureate Lecture Series.
Named after and founded by esteemed emeritus faculty member, Milton Kafoglis, this lecture series seeks to bring eminent economists to the Atlanta area to speak on important and relevant topics in economics to a broad audience.
Our 2023 Emory Economics - Kafoglis Nobel Laureate Lecture was held on Monday, March 27, 2023 with over 200 people in attendance. Read more about it in the Emory Wheel.

The Econonomics Dept hosted its 5th department bowling party on Saturday, February 18th at The Comet Pub & Lanes in Decatur. Faculty, staff, graduate students and their families enjoyed a relaxed afternoon of bowling and refreshments. Over 75 people attended this annual departmental social event.

Economics Department Partners with Eagle Food Co-Op on Fall Service Project
Friday, October 14, 2022 thru Thanksgiving
As a way to help, the Economics Department Staff has initiated a partnership with Bread Coffeehouse and the Emory Eagle Food Co-Op Food Pantry to stock the shelves between October 14th and Thanksgiving. We were delighted to be included as an Emory Cares project as a way to include our Alumni in this important department service project.
We have provided an easy way to contribute online: Purchase food items from our Amazon gift registry OR non-food items and gift cards ($5+) from our Target community registry.

Happening on Wednesday February 15, from 7PM-8:30PM (end time is approximate) at the Economics Student Lounge in the Rich Building, Room 301. Attendees played a fun game of economics-related trivia while getting dinner (Chick-Fil-A!).

Emory Hosts Students from Heritage Preparatory School for Week-long Intensive Introduction to Economics
Thirty 9th and 10th graders from Heritage Preparatory School visited Emory during their week-long intensive introduction to Economics. On January 26, 2023, students attended brief presentations by multiple faculty, undergraduate honors students, and a graduate student as well as participated in Dr. Kelli Lanier's Economics and Psychology class. Students enjoyed learning about various specializations within the field of Economics.
4 + 1 Economics BA/MS Info Session Planned for January 2023

Our final 4+1 BA/MS information session prior to the January 31st application deadline was held on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at 6:00 pm on Zoom. All students were welcome to attend and juniors who meet the minimum admissions requirements (at least a 3.5 GPA after Fall 2022 grades and completion of classes found here) received a promo code for 50% off the $75 application fee.

The application deadline for the 4+1 cohort starting Fall 2023 is January 31, 2023. We will notify students of their acceptance prior to the pre-registration period for Fall 2023 so that students can register for the appropriate coursework
Emory Econ Alumni Jean Jung Featured in Alumni Talk

Are you interested in a career in tech or learning more about the intersections of healthcare and economics? We recently hosted one of our alumni, Jean Jung (14C) in the Department on Tuesday, November 29th for a question set led by Dr. Banerjee and meet and greet with Jean afterwards. Despite being finished with undergrad only 8 years ago, Jean’s career has had quite the trajectory; she finished her master’s degree in Healthcare Management at Harvard, founded and sold (to Meta/Facebook) a VR company to aid with pediatric hospital patients’ social interactions and therapy, and now works at Google. You can read more about her in this feature we wrote in 2020 that went out in our alumni newsletter.

This workshop was facilitated by our new Business Cluster Assistant Director of the Career Center, Marshall Tucker. Marshall also held drop-in hours in the Economics Department Student Lounge on Thursday, September 29th from 2-4 pm.

Graduate Student 'Publication Celebration' Planned for April
In 2022, we began a tradition of celebrating graduate students' first peer-reviewed article with the Emory affiliation while enrolled in our program. We are thrilled to announce that both third-year graduate student, Jung Jae Kim [The Asian Economic Journal], and fourth-year graduate student, Tianhao Zhao [China Economic Review], have had their work published in peer-reviewed journals this past year! Congratulations

Second Annual Women in Economics Mentoring Dinner

Female graduate students were invited to a unique mentoring discussion covering some of the unspoken challenges for women in Economics led by Emory Economics faculty, Elena Pesavento, Paloma Moyano and Maggie Jones. This pot-luck dinner featured dishes from around the world and was attended by 14 female graduate students.

The China Research Center promotes understanding of greater China based on in-depth research and experience.
