Welcome to Fall 2026

In Fall 2026, the department is pleased to welcome new department leadership including Department Chair, Director of Masters Programs, and Director of Undergraduate Studies.

In addition, we welcome eight new doctoral students, nineteen master of science students, and 500+ returning undergraduate students with an Economics major or minor. 

 Hugo Mialon, Chair

We are pleased to announce that our colleague Hugo Mialon has been appointed as our new Department Chair, effective September 1, 2026. 

Hugo brings extensive leadership experience to this role, having served for many years as our Director of Undergraduate Studies and as Associate Chair during the 2023-2024 academic year. His longstanding commitment to the department, combined with his dedication to excellence in teaching, research, and service, make him exceptionally well suited to lead us into the future. We are excited to welcome Hugo as Department Chair and look forward to working with him in this new capacity.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our outgoing Department Chair, Hashem Dezhbakhsh, whose outstanding leadership earned him the distinction of Chair of the Decade. We wish Hashem all the best during his well-deserved leave and thank him for his many years of dedicated service to the department.

Vivian Yue, Associate Chair

We are pleased that our colleague Vivian Yue has accepted to serve another year as the Associate Chair of the Economics Department.

Kaiji Chen, Director of Masters Programs

We are pleased to announce that our colleague Kaiji Chen has accepted to serve as the Director of Masters Programs overseeing all masters programs including the Economics MS program and 4+1BA/MS program, effective August 1, 2026.

We welcome Robert Garlick to our department as he joins our faculty as Acting Associate Professor. Rob's areas of interest include Development Economics, Labor Economics, Economics of Education, and Applied Econometrics.

Congratulations and welcome to students in our Economics MS Program and our Economics 4+1 Program! We have a total of 19 students taking on this wonderful opportunity!

Emory celebrates the students admitted in 2026 [Class of 2030], drawn from the largest applicant pool in the university's history! In total, Emory admitted 5,317 students to the Class of 2030, with 3,679 admitted to Emory College and 2,726 admitted to Oxford College. Of those students, 1,088 were admitted to both colleges and may choose which to attend [source]. The Economics Department looks forward to connecting with these new Emory students and invites them to consider Economics as part of their academic journey at Emory.
